Portugal is sure to surprise you. While you would not often associate these marine animals with the Atlantic Ocean, there are turtles, sharks, whales and dolphins to spot. There’s something for every level whether recreational or technical, wrecks or reefs. 

The Azores located close to Lisbon is famous for diving, made up of an archipelago of volcanic peaks in the middle of the Atlantic. From April to October there’s the chance to spot a variety of whales, sharks and dolphins. Visibility ranges from 5 to 40 meters.

The Algarve coast, located on Portugal’s southern-tip, is on the Atlantic Ocean. It has fewer currents than other parts of the country. Visibility ranges from 5 to 15 meters. For those visiting Lisbon and who want to add-on a bit of diving, head to Sesimbra lying within Arrabida National Park. You can dive here at any time of year.

When is the best time to go diving in Portugal? 

The best time of year to dive is subjective and depends on your budget. If tight on cash, you might want to visit Madeira and the Azores during the winter. In both of these locations, you can spot whales year-round. 

Water Temperature: The water temperature ranges from 16°C in the winter months to 25°C in summer.

Portugal’s best dive sites

Berlengas National Park 

Located close to Peniche, a famous fishing village, the Berlengas National Park lies. This protected park is absolutely stunning. It has a volcanic and sandy bottom, take your time searching for treasures underneath. There’s a cave dive featuring red gorgonians.

Ocean Wreck, Algarve

Dating back to the Seven Years’ War, Ocean was sunk by the English in 1759. This is one of the oldest wrecks in the world to explore while scuba diving. Even beginner divers can enjoy this impressive wreck as it lies in 10 meters of water.

River Gurara wreck, Sesimbra

Located 49 km from Lisbon, Sesimbra is a small coastal town on the Atlantic Ocean. Sesimbra has a huge range of diving options for all levels. The ship is broken into two parts and therefore can be done in separate dives. The stern of the ship lies at 25 meters while the bow is located at 30 meters. The ship is covered in gorgonians, sea anemones and sponges. Home to some interesting creatures like cuttlefish, octopus and lobsters.
