What is Dry Suit Diving?

Diving in a dry suit is nothing comparable to diving in swimwear or in a wetsuit. There is something truly unique about going on a dive and still being completely dry except for your hair after the dive. Dry suits work to keep the user warm by using thermal insulation and excluding water. Some divers prefer to dive in dry suits in both tropical and cold waters. Opting to stay dry and warm despite the conditions.

Dry suits allow for greater freedom of movement compared to a regular wetsuit. This makes them ideal for cave diving or wreck diving as you are able to shape your body more easily. Many divers in the past year because of corona have had to start diving locally. For some, this means diving in less than favourable conditions. Dry suit diving makes this more manageable.

There are two types of materials that dry suits are made out of. Trilaminate is a lightweight, malleable material that does not impact your buoyancy. If you plan to travel, this is most likely the option you will opt for. By itself it does not keep you warm and you will have to layer undergarments based on the outside conditions. The second type of suit is a neoprene suit, which is essentially a thick wetsuit that is waterproof. These tend to restrict movement but are warmer and can be used without undergarments.

When selecting a suit, the size, fit and shape are everything. If you are ordering online, be sure to take your exact measurements. You don’t want a suit that constricts or restricts your movement. There are gloves, hard boots and hoods designed to be worn with dry suits.

Dry suits take routine maintenance and proper care. Before you start diving, take a look at your dry suit inspecting it for any corrosion, tears or cracks. Both the inflator and exhaust valves should work. Put soapy water on the suit to lubricate the seals. After each dive, immediately rinse the suit with fresh water while you’re still wearing it. Clean the seals with soap water and rinse the suit. Turn it inside out in case any drops fall inside the suit.

Pick a dry suit that you are comfortable operating. Check its seals, zippers, and valves to make sure you are happy operating the dry suit. Remember to lubricate the zippers with wax, this will save you from having to constantly renew them. Dry suits if maintained correctly can last for over 20 years. They require routine maintenance but are worth the initial cost if maintained correctly.
